Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve encompasses over 750,000 acres of volcanic cones, craters, lava tubes and flows, creating the largest lava field of its kind in the contiguous United States. This otherworldly landscape provides habitat for a surprising diversity of plants and animals uniquely acclimated to the high-desert ecosystem. Adaptations such as nocturnal (nighttime) or crepuscular (dawn & dusk) activity, as well as estivation (hibernation during the hot summer months) help many species survive the extreme seasonal changes.
