Nene

The Nene is a non-migratory wild goose, endemic to and the official state bird of Hawaii. They stand about 16 inches tall, and spend most of their time on the ground, where they both forage and breed. Due to non-native predators, the nene population fell to only 30 individuals in 1952. Conservation efforts to breed and protect the last native goose of the Hawaiian Islands have seen positive results, but the nene is still considered the world’s rarest goose.
