Opossum Mother & Babies Pin
Opossums are the only marsupials to live in North America. Their babies are born after an 11-13 day gestation period, then climb into the mother's pouch where they continue to grow for about 2 weeks until they are old enough to survive on their own. Their hairless, prehensile tail is used for grasping, balancing, and carrying nest material. Opossums are nocturnal scavengers and an omnivores, feeding on bugs, small rodents and frogs, berries, fruit, and grains. They are great pest control – a single opossum can eat over 5,000 ticks in a season! – and are highly resistant to rabies.
