The California Tortoiseshell Butterfly is part of the Brush-footed family, so called for their short, hairy forelegs. They can be identified by their bright orange-brown wings with dark markings and a two-inch wingspan, but when the “tortie” is perched, they may be more difficult to distinguish, as the undersides of their wings are a mottled gray, allowing the butterfly to seamlessly camouflage with tree trunks. Breeding numbers vary greatly from year to year, and they migrate to higher elevations to estivate during the hot summer months.
