A mixing of cold currents from the north and warmer southern flows creates a unique ocean environment that attracts an unusually rich and diverse variety of marine life to the waters around these five islands off the California coast. Spiny lobsters found in warmer waters inhabit Channel Islands’ underwater kelp forests, mingling with fish and mammal species common to colder waters. The kelp forests and their marine residents are prime attractions for divers and snorkelers.
