Colorado Cutthroat Trout
Colorado has three subspecies of cutthroat trout: Colorado River, Rio Grande, and the federally threatened greenback, the state fish of Colorado. Native cutthroat trout have declined throughout their range due to habitat changes, non-native trout introductions and disease. Through extensive efforts, federal and state agencies are restoring native cutthroat trout populations and their habitats. Anglers can help! Use barbless hooks and safely return cutthroats to the water. Cutthroat trout are distinguished by the red to orange slash on their lower jaws and heavier spotting towards their tails.
