Elk

The Elk is the second largest species of the deer family. Bulls, weighing in at about 700 pounds and standing five feet tall at the shoulder, shed and grow antlers every year; their echoing bugle signals the beginning of mating season each autumn. European settlers reduced the elk population from 10 million to less than 100,000 by 1900. Today, populations are increasing and there are about 1 million elk in the U.S. and Canada.
