First documented in Texas around 1850, having migrated from South America, the Nine-banded Armadillo is the only one of 21 species that resides as far north as the United States. Armadillos now extend as far as Florida and North Carolina to the east, and Indiana and Illinois to the north, and continue to rapidly expand colonization in the USA without any natural predators. Their sharp claws make them prolific diggers, allowing them to feast on insects, grubs and other invertebrates. They build burrows in moist soil near creeks and streams near fertile feeding grounds.
