Common Loon

The Common Loon is a large water bird sensitive to human disturbances. An efficient swimmer, it propels itself though the water with its feet to catch fish and swallows most of its prey underwater.  A loon can fly at speeds up to 70 mph, but requires a long runway of water to prepare for takeoff. It is more awkward on land due to the placement of its legs far back on its body, only going ashore to mate and incubate eggs.
