The Mallard is the most widespread and abundant duck in North America, and is the ancestor of nearly all domestic duck breeds. It is the most hunted duck species. Males have an iridescent green head and pale body, while females are a mottled brown with blue wing patches. Mallards pair in autumn, court through winter, and breed in spring. The female lays a clutch of 8-13 eggs, accounting for more than half her body weight.
