The prothonotary warbler is a large, heavy-bodied warbler, with shorter legs and tail, and a longer, heavier bill than other warblers. Though the entomology of their name is unclear, it is believed that the name 'Prothonotary' refers to their resemblance to the bright yellow robes of the historical scribes of the Byzantine Empire. The prothonotary warbler is unique among eastern warblers in its habit of nesting in holes in trees, rather than in the open. They are often seen foraging above slow-moving or standing bodies of water, hopping along low branches and fallen trees or dropping to the ground in search of food.
