Eulachon are anadromous fish, moving between freshwater and saltwater bodies along the northern Pacific coast of North America. They are the largest smelt of their region, reaching around 8 inches (20 cm) in length. Also known as “candlefish”, with a 20% fat content, eulachon were a major trade item between costal and interior Native Americans and are still used as food, medicine and torch fuel by native cultures. They are an important food source for wildlife, including sea lions, river otters, harbor seals and shore birds, on the North Pacific and Southeast Alaska coast.
