Lampreys are a part of an ancient class of jawless fish, which evolved over 450 million years ago. In the larval phase they burrow into sediment and filter-feed in freshwater stream environments; once in the juvenile phase, they migrate to the ocean to feed.  Adult Pacific lampreys have three large anterior teeth and many posterior teeth on their oral disc. Parasitic, they latch onto a host fish, such as Pacific salmon, Pollock, rockfish and flatfish, extracting blood and bodily fluids without killing the host. They migrate back up freshwater streams to spawn, ending their life-cycle.
