Blackburnian Warblers may be difficult to spot in the upper canopy of mixed deciduous-coniferous forests, but patience will pay off, as the breeding male with vivid orange face and throat is unmistakable; females and juveniles have a lighter coloration but all feature the unique triangular facial pattern in black or gray. They subsist on caterpillars and other insects, often scouring entire branches from base to tip by hopping and creeping along them, looking up at the underside of leaves and inside clumps of dead leaves. Strong fliers, they migrate between North and South America each year, and can often be seen outside of their typical habitats during these twice-yearly migrations.
