Pupfish

There are 13 species of Pupfish. This tiny fish grows to an average length of 2.5 inches and reaches full maturity within 2 to 3 months. Their average life span is 6 to 9 months. Spawning starts toward the end of February and continues through the summer. But as summer temperatures become extreme, evaporation dries up most pools and streams, resulting in the death of most Pupfish. Pupfish are protected at various locations in Death Valley National Park and can also be seen at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
