Few places in this country are as closely associated with one another as Texas and the Alamo, located in today’s downtown San Antonio. On March 6, 1836, Mexican troops under the command of General Antonio López de Santa Anna successfully assaulted the 18th-century Spanish mission, killing all of its approximately 200 defenders. Six weeks later, Texas independence was won at the one-sided Battle of San Jacinto. Visitors today reverently tour this hallowed site that to many Americans symbolizes selfless sacrifice.
