Towering above the Pacific Ocean and the Hawai‘ian island of Maui, the dormant Haleakala volcano is topped by a 19-square-mile, half-mile-deep depression. It was formed largely by erosion from torrential rains that carved out large valleys on the mountain, two of which joined near the summit. A hike through the “Crater” reveals interesting plant life and geologic features. A highlight of a visit to this paradise park is experiencing a spectacular sunrise or sunset from the volcano’s 10,023-foot summit.
