Formed by particles of golden sand that are scooped up by prevailing southwesterly winds and deposited at the base of the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Great Sand Dunes’ main dune field covers more than 30 square miles. The massive dunes rise as high as 755 feet above the San Luis Valley floor, and they are constantly shifting and being reshaped. This Colorado park also preserves mountain wilderness with rugged summits towering above 13,000 feet.
