The Piping Plover is a small shorebird and a master of camouflage, whose name is derived from its bell-like whistles, often heard before the bird is visible. Short and round, with sandy gray-tan feathers, breeding adults have a short orange bill with a black tip, a black neck band and black crown stripe. A protected species, Piping Plovers breed along ocean shores in the Northeast and along lakeshores and alkali wetlands in the northern Great Plains and Great Lakes. They nest in soft sandy areas with sparse vegetation and forage for worms, insects and crustaceans around the high-tide line.
