The Barn Swallow is the most abundant and widely distributed swallow species in the world. It is the only North American swallow with a long forked tail. The female’s tail is less forked while the male’s has longer streamers. They consume large numbers of grasshoppers, flies, aphids, beetles, bees, moths and other flying insects. Populations are much greater now than they were before European settlement of North America.
