Energetic and vibrant, these diminutive birds sport iridescent green plumage on their backs and crowns and a white breast. The male has a brilliant red gorget (throat patch). During the summer the birds’ range extends throughout the western U.S. and central Mexico, overwintering as far south as Guatemala. Nests are made up of plant fibers woven together and bound to a branch with spider webs. In flight, their wings make a trilling noise distinct to this species.
