The Ruby-throated is the most common hummingbird species in the eastern United States. It is among the smallest of North American hummingbirds, measuring 3 to 3.75 inches from beak to tail with a wingspan of 4 to 4.75 inches. They feed on small insects, spiders and the nectar of more than 30 plants. Their extremely short legs prevent walking or hopping; they are only capable of shuffling side-to-side on a perch.
