Walrus Pin
Walruses are terrestrial marine mammals; the Latin name for the walrus, Odobenus rosmarus, translates as “tooth-walking sea horse.” There are two populations of walrus: the Pacific walrus and the Atlantic walrus. Pacific walruses are slightly larger, with larger heads, longer tusks, and have a population around 200,000; Atlantic walrus populations are estimated around 20,000. Pacific walruses are more migratory, using ice floes to follow the ice edge north during the summer and south in winter, while Atlantic walruses will utilize ice-free beaches in the summer while waiting for the sea ice to return.
