The Mule Deer is found in rough, steep canyons with brush and thickets throughout the western United States, including the deserts of the southwest. They can be identified by their namesake long mule-like ears, as well as a black-tipped tail. Ever alert, these deer rely on their sharp senses to warn of danger. Their large feet allow them to dig out water up to two feet deep, which they detect with their keen sense of smell.
