The Painted Bunting is the most brilliantly colored songbird of North America. Males are brightly multicolored, while females and immature males are entirely bright green. This sparrow-sized bird favors open areas with dense brush and forages on the ground and in low brush for seeds and insects. The steady population decline over several decades may be due to habitat loss and trapping in wintering grounds for the international pet trade.
