Purple Martin Patch

Purple Martins are large swallows with short forked tails and long, tapered wings. Males are a vibrant dark-blue purple with brown-black wings and tails; females and adolescents are a more subdued hue of purple with a white underbelly. They roost together by the thousands in late summer, forming such dense gatherings that they can be seen on weather radars. Purple martins catch all their food in flight, usually flying higher than other swallows when feeding; they also drink in mid-air by skimming ponds with their lower bill.
