The American Alligator, once endangered, now thrives in freshwater rivers and swamps of the southern United States, with populations estimated at over 1 million. They are distinguished from crocodiles by their short, rounded snout, darker skin color and webbed feet. Males average 10 to 15 feet in length and can weigh up to 1,000 pounds; females are slightly smaller. In the wild, they can live between 35 and 50 years.
