Banana Slugs are found in temperate coniferous forests along the west coast from Alaska to California, and are important species in the forest ecosystem, speeding up decomposition on the forest floor and providing nutrients to the incredible redwood trees that they live below. They are often bright yellow, but can also be greenish, brown, tan or white; individuals alter in color based on their diet and exposure to light and moisture, or as an indication of health. Their mucous aids in mating and movement, numbs the mouth of predators, and can absorb up to 100 times its volume in water.
