Bats are found everywhere in the world except extremely hot, desert environments and cold polar regions. With 900 species worldwide, six of the 45 species found in the U.S. are on the endangered list. Humans are the main reason for their population decline. A person entering a cave and disturbing their hibernation will cause a bat to use as much energy as it spends hibernating for two to three weeks, thus potentially starving to death before spring.
