The Belted Kingfisher is a medium-sized bird with a large head and shaggy crest. It is one of the few bird species in which the female is more brightly colored than the male. They breed along streams, rivers, lakes and estuaries with banks for nest holes, and feed almost entirely on aquatic prey. Their breeding range has expanded due to human activity such as road building and digging gravel pits, creating banks where they can nest.
