The official state flower of Maryland, the black-eyed Susan is a favorite among pollinators such as moths, butterflies, bees and dragonflies. Bright yellow florets circle the distinct dome-shaped “black eye” cone of the flower, blooming in late summer and early fall. This daisy-like flower can be identified by the rough texture of its stems and leaves. Preferring sunny, American meadows, black-eyed Susans grow close to the ground, only reaching heights of 12-40 inches tall.
