Quercus kelloggi, is a red oak native to western North America. Trees typically grow 30-82 feet in height, with the record holder measuring 124 feet tall, in the Siskiyou National forest in Oregon. A critical species for wildlife as well as used by humans for centuries as food and shelter, historically extensive California black oak stands in Yosemite Valley are attributed to cultivation and frequent understory burning by the Miwoks. Trees begin sporadic acorn production around 30 years of age or 39 feet in height, with large crops produced beginning at 80 to 100 years of age.
