Part of the Cypress family, the giant sequoia is among the tallest and heaviest trees in the world. This majestic evergreen grows to an average height of 164’-279’ (50-85 m) in groves of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Spongy, thick and fire-resistant bark covers their massive trunks, with diameters ranging from 20’-26’ (6-8 m). The oldest known sequoia (estimated to be close to 3,400 years old) and the largest living specimen (General Sherman) can both be found in Sequoia National Park.
