The Chinook Salmon, or King Salmon, is the largest species of the Pacific salmon family. Varying from blue-green, red or purple with black spots on the back and tail, they range in length from 24 to 36 inches and weigh between 10 and 50 pounds on average. Fry remain in fresh water for 12 to 18 months before swimming downstream to the sea, where they spend from 1 to 8 years in the open ocean before returning to spawn in their natal stream.
