The chocolate lily stands 8-24 inches tall with whorls of five to nine leaves down the stem, crowned with drooping dark greenish-purple flowers sometimes streaked or spotted with yellow. As a perennial forb native to the coastal pacific northwest region of North America, the Huna Tlingit harvest the plant’s bulbs in the spring.The bulbs, resembling clusters of white rice, are broken apart and then soaked in one or more changes of water to remove the bitter taste, then cooked & eaten with wild rhubarb and berries, or boiled and eaten with oil or lard and added to soups and stews.
