Claret Cup Cactus Pin

Claret cup cacti grow in clumps of spiny mounds or barrels, low to the ground and usually 3-4 feet across. Their showy, funnel shaped red flowers bloom in the early spring in southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The cactus’ resemblance to the hedgehog inspired both this plant’s scientific name “Echinocereus” (from Greek “echinos”, meaning “hedgehog”) and its nickname “hedgehog cactus.”
