Claret Cup Bookmark

Claret cup cacti grow in clumps of spiny mounds of barrels, low to the ground and usually 3-4 feet across. Their showy, funnel-shaped red flowers bloom in the early spring in southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The cactus’ resemblance to the hedgehog inspired both this plant’s scientific name “Echinocereus” (from Greek “echinos”, meaning “hedgehog”) and its nickname “hedgehog cactus.”
