Cloudberries, or salmonberries, are a type of thornless raspberry and a botanical member of the rose family that grows low to the ground. The 3 to 4 inch-high plants consist of small, dark, heart-shaped leaves; white flowers give way to individual berries that turn from a dark reddish-orange color to a pale pink-orange color as they ripen. In Alaska the Inupiat mix the berries, called aqpik, in with whipped fat and cooked fish or caviar for a rich, nourishing dish.
