Cloudberries, or salmonberries, are a type of thornless raspberry and a botanical member of the rose family that grow low to the ground. The 3 to 4-inch-high plants consist of small, dark, heart-shaped leaves; white flowers give way to individual berries that turn from a dark reddish-orange color to a pale pink-orange color as they ripen. In Alaska the Inupiat made a rich, nourishing dish by mixing the berries, called aqpik, in with whipped fat and cooked fish or caviar.
