The name "daisy" applies to a handful of species within the Asteraceae family of plants. The common daisy has spoon-shaped leaves forming a rosette at the base of the plant, close to the ground. A single stem carries the flower head - look closely to find a composite of tiny flowers making up the yellow center ('disc florets') surrounded by white 'ray florets' (which look like petals). Named from the Old English "day's eye," as the flower opens in the morning and closes at night; some types of daisies are considered invasive weeds, while others make attractive perennial garden borders.
