Desert Tortoise

This endangered species lives in the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts and is the largest reptile in the Mojave, ranging between 8” and 15” long. Maturing at 14 to 20 years of age, they typically live about 80 years. They live in burrows to escape summer heat and winter cold. When no water is available, they’re able to absorb water from their bladder. It’s important not to approach a desert tortoise as, when frightened, they’ll empty their bladder as a defense mechanism. Unfortunately, this can be fatal.
