The flowering dogwood, Cornus florida, is a species of flowering tree native to eastern North America and northern Mexico. Growing 5 to 15 m tall, the tree is commonly planted as an ornamental because of its showy bracts and interesting bark structure, broken into small square blocks that resemble alligator skin. Flowering dogwood is an important understory species in the eastern deciduous and southern coniferous forests, providing habitat & shelter, as well as seeds that are high in calcium and fat content for songbirds and foraging omnivores.
