Prairie dogs live socially in large underground towns subdivided into 15-26 family units; families are made up of one male, two to three females and their young offspring. Spanning up to an acre, each family burrow contains many defined chambers such as nurseries, sleeping quarters and even toilets. They have several exits featuring listening and observation posts to safely keep tabs on the movements of nearby predators.
