Fairy Slipper Pin

The fairy slipper, or Calypso bulbosa is the only species in the orchid genus Calypso. Typically 2-8 in (8 to 20 cm) tall, plants have a single, oval shaped leaf and a stalk that produces one slipper-like pendant flower. These uncommon orchids thrive in cool coniferous forests and bogs and require specific mycorrhizal fungi to survive. Native peoples of North America have used the corms as a food source as well as treatment for mild epilepsy.
