The alpine forget-me-not grows on mountain slopes and in grassy meadows in ecosystems between 7,500 and 10,000 feet. As the official state flower of Alaska, this high-altitude plant has a short, summer growing season with small flowers blooming in color from blue to pink to white, centered around a distinctive yellow ring. German legend claims the plant’s name originated after a knight fell into the Danube River while picking blue flowers for his lady. As the water swept him away, he tossed his colorful bouquet to her, exclaiming “forget-me-not!”
