A dark night is a resource integral to many natural processes, and has become nationally important with the loss of night sky quality over the last five decades. St Louis sits right beneath the Mississippi Flyway, where migrating passerine birds reference stars to fly at night and can be disoriented by city lights and towers. The National Park service recognizes that dark night skies are critical to protect migrating birds, and has been turning the Gateway Arch’s exterior lights off each spring and fall during the height of migration seasons since 2002.
