Giant Sequoia Cone Bookmark

The giant sequoia tree produces thousands of cones, surprisingly small (around 2 inches) compared to the massive size of its host tree. Each cone has 30-50 scales, holding several seeds on each scale, averaging 230 seeds per cone. The cone seeds are dispersed within sequoia groves with the assistance of insects, Douglas squirrels, heat and fires. It takes 1-3 years for the sequoia cone to mature, remaining green and unopened for as long as 20 years.
