Gray Whales mature to an average size of 45-46 feet with weights of 30-40 tons; females are slightly larger than males. They inhabit shallow coastal waters off the eastern North Pacific. Leaving the Bering and Chukchi Seas in October and heading to their mating and calving lagoons in the Gulf of California and Baja, Mexico, they make one of the longest of all mammalian migrations, averaging 10,000-14,000 miles round trip.
