The gyrfalcon (pronounced "JER-falcon") is a large falcon that ranges in color from white with black spotting, to shades of white, gray and dark brown with blunt tipped wings; females are typically substantially larger than males. Gyrfalcons breed on arctic tundra; migrating south into mainland Canada and Alaska for the winter, they seek a similar habitat of open fields, coastlines, prairie, dunes and shrubsteppe. They subsist on smaller birds, especially ptarmigan, nesting seabirds and waterfowl, as well as small rodents, hares, and young arctic fox.
