The harpy eagle is a neotropical rainforest species found in low elevations from southern Mexico through Central & South America. Among the most powerful raptors in the world, their claws extend 3-4 inches, the size of a grizzly bear’s! Harpy eagles have a facial disk composed of feathers that provides them with a keen sense of hearing. They are agile flyers, moving between trees and branches with ease, making them skilled hunters of arboreal animals including iguanas, parrots, porcupines, coati, and raccoons. They will occasionally hunt ground dwelling animals, including javelina and armadillos.
